On the core site of Wangtan Shantytown Renovation in Dongcheng District, Beijing, a landmark silver-grey pit air membrane stands tall. Wangtan Nursing Home is a key livelihood project in Dongcheng District, with a tight schedule, high social concern, and is located in the core city, which requires extremely strict requirements for construction environmental protection (dust and noise), safety and community impact control. In the face of the possible stifling problem of traditional pit air dome in summer and the difficulties of L-shaped irregular site, the team of Xinyuan Air Membrane made an in-depth on-site survey, communicated closely with the general contractor, design institute and the owner, and clearly defined the core objectives of "improving the working environment, strictly controlling the environmental impact, and guaranteeing the construction efficiency", and formulated a special construction plan accordingly. The special construction programme was formulated accordingly.
In view of the irregular site characteristics of the L-shaped foundation pit of the project, the Xinyuan air membrane adopts a single-layer air-bearing structural design with external cable netting, successfully realising a difficult space closure with a total length of 167m, a width of 26m and a highest point of 9m. The positive pressure environment inside the membrane is maintained by the air supply system, so that the soft membrane forms a stable self-supporting structure without the need for traditional beam and column support, which not only guarantees the integrity of the internal construction of the pit, but also solves the difficult problem of enclosing the irregular site.
In terms of environmental performance, the project selected grey shade type PVDF three-layer membrane, together with the fully enclosed structure and peripheral sprinkler system, to build multiple dust barriers. This combination of design effectively reduces the spread of construction dust, while the grey-toned membrane material coordinates with the core city environment, reducing the impact of construction on the surrounding visual environment. The fully enclosed structure also provides a natural barrier to construction noise, creating a relatively quiet living environment for neighbouring residents.
Considering the long-term nature of pit construction and the comfort of workers' operation, Xinyuan Air Membrane integrates the combination of "top exhaust air + wet curtain cooling + heat insulation net" in the system to alleviate the problem of high temperature inside the membrane in summer. The environmental sensors installed inside the membrane can monitor the dust concentration, harmful gas content, temperature and humidity in real time, and together with the automatic adjustment module, it ensures a safe and controllable construction environment, which provides a more reliable safety guarantee for frontline workers.
